Notes: Smaller, darker, slimmer than
Plumed Whistling-Duck.
Entirely dark bill, black crown & back of neck. Short straight
flank plumes whitish, edged chestnut. Uppertail coverts form a white
V shape in flight. Largest of three subspecies & the only one in Aust.
Prefers deep vegetated lagoons & swamps, flooded grasslands,
where it feeds almost entirely on aquatic vegetation & seeds.
Disperses from dry-season refuges around permanent water to ephemeral
breeding sites.
