Notes: Like White-browed Scrubwren w. pale eye, white fringes to black shoulder; but small white
spot below eye; coarse dark streaked underparts. Dark facial mask — black for male, brown (like
crown) for female. Ssp balstoni paler overall than nominate maculatus, throat & underparts white, streaking less heavy; mellori also paler, grey-brown above (never any rufous tinge), whitish below, spots & streaks vary,
flanks brown; ashbyi closely resembles mellori, but bill longer, crown & upperparts darker.

Range from Birds of the World description. In dense, usually moist, undergrowth of forests, mallee, mulga, saltbush.
