Notes: Desert kingfisher w. white streaking on crown;
rufous back, rump, uppertail coverts
(cf
Sacred Kingfisher). Female: greens & blues of upperparts
duller than male. Juvenile:
initially w. small white tip to bill,
pink tinge to basal half of lower mandible, feathers on sides
of
breast & neck scalloped by blackish fringes. Perches on high dead
trees or wires.
Excavates tunnel nest in earth-walls & banks.
