Notes: Secretive. Differs from crakes and
Buff-banded Rail by short rear-end and long, slightly
downcurved
pink bill. Ssps differ by prominence of crown streaks, colour of crown,
upperparts &
breast, extent of white on throat, etc. Name
brachpus means 'short'. Forages in ooze near runs
in dense cover,
usually near water. In reeds, saltmarsh, tussocks of wetlands on coasts,
rainforests, heathlands.
