Notes: Medium sized rail w. unmarked ginger breast-band of
variable width. Pale supercilium;
shorter, more stocky bill than
Lewin's. Plain grey throat; underparts
below breastband finely
barred black & white. Redish bill &
eye. Juvenile darker, ghosted pattern of adult; bill & eye dark.
Twenty subspecies, separated on plumage pattern: ssp mellori
in Aust, Norflolk Isl;
andrewsi on Cocos (Keeling) Isl. Resident.
In most wetland types. Usually secretive.
