Notes: Stocky w. stout dark bill, short yellow legs. Adult is rufous w. pale breast & a black cap
clear of eye. Two white plumes on nape. Yellow eye, facial skin green. Juvenile head & neck
heavily streaked, saddle & upperwing coverts boldly spotted white. Cf. Little Heron. Mainly
nocturnal, roosting by day in large groups in leafy trees near water. On Cocos Islands active all
day — the dominant bird.
