Notes: Large, heavily marked ground-dwelling plump quail.
Dense wavy barring under; plain face
w. no supercilium
(cf Stubble Quail). Iris red
in mainland ssp, yellow in larger Tas ssp. Female
lateral crown stripes,
black mottling on back; male tends rufous in North. Mournful two-note
call whistle. In swampy areas with dense long grass. Explodes from cover when
almost underfoot.
