Notes: Bright yellow & black &
olive colours; pointed projecting ear-tufts. Ssp meltoni smaller than
nominate melanops. Ssp cassidix (the "Helmeted Honeyeater") largest,
darkest; very similar to ssp gippslandicus except that the forehead
tuft of feathers is more conspicuous, forming richer yellower crest. In dry
open sclerophyll forests & eucalypt woodlands w. shrubby undergrowth.
Ssp cassidix in dense riverine vegetation w. mixed dense understory,
restricted to Yellingbo.
