Notes: Large, plump w. short bill, violet-blue iris. Male: dark blue plumage in years 5–6; pale bill.
Female: grey-green above, brown wings, pale below w. heavy scalloping; dark grey bill. Juvenile:
like female but duller, browner upperparts; rounded scaling on underparts. Ssp minor smaller;
duller body plumage in female & immature than nominate violaceus — latter's bower entrance
blue decorations; minor lines entrance w. green moss.
