Notes: Male: brilliant green with black mantle. Iris &
bill orange/red. Conspicuous scarlet
shoulder patch on male, less so on
female; primaries brown-green. Blue rump (hard to see).
Female duller, w.
reduced red in wing, bill dull orange. Juvenile like female but yellow-brown bill,
brown iris. Ssp coccineopterus smaller, w. blue wash on hindcrown, than nominate
erythropterus.
Widespread; needs to drink water; feeds mostly in canopy.
