eye-stripe, back. Varying dark brown
breast-band. Iris pale yellow. In
flight, bowed wings, blackish patches at carpel joint, underwing
coverts of
primaries unbarred & extensively ashy brown. Male clean white underparts.
Female:
larger; variable 'necklace'. Juvenile: browner; whitish fringes to
upperparts; bolder necklace;
brown flecks on white crown. Plunge dives for
fish. Occurs near coasts & large water bodies.
