Bulbous bill. Male: red tail-panels. Female:
orange-red tail panels w. variable black barring, reduc-
ing w. age. Juvenile: barred
undertail, pale yellow spots on underparts, pale grey bill & bare skin
around
eye. Subspecies have minimal differences; nominate lathami rare, halmaturinus
endanger-
ed; erebus occurs Gympie to Eungella. Feeds on abundant Casuarina
seeds in forests & woodlands.
