Notes: Large head, orange iris. Male erectile crest, white face,
black bib. Female black crest, white
& buff below. Juvenile: brown iris,
pale base to bill, yellow gape. Ssp pallescens is slightly smaller
than
nominate gutturalis, male with significantly shorter wing, both sexes also
paler (especially on
upperparts), male with more white on forehead. Lovely
repeated call. Ground feeder in mulga &
mallee scrub, semi-arid woodland.
