Notes: Male: bold black crescent on upper breast, bold
yellow panels on folded wing and outer tail.
White outer tail tips,
white eyebrow. Female: muted colours. Juvenile male and female: dull
versions. Ssp halmaturinus is smaller than nominate pyrrhopterus
but w. longer bill , less distinct
supercilium; adult female differs from
female nominate in less distinct breast-crescents.
Call: loud "egypt",
repeated. Typically inhabits wet forests, often at higher elevations.
