Notes: Upper parts blackish-brown; orbital ring pale blue.
Male: chin, throat breast white.
Female: chin, throat rich rufous brown.
Juvenile: upperpart feathers rusty rufous w. pale central
shafts &
blackish-brown tips. Ssp melasmenus (N of Julatten) is smaller &
darker than nominate
spaldingii (S to Paluma Ranges), with black
of nape not clearly demarcated from mantle, bill
~longer. Very vocal at
dawn in groups on floor of tropical rainforest. Cf related
Logrunner.
