Notes: Fairly small. Black head & neck, white belly &
breast. Underwing is white w. a black border.
Back & upperwings are very
distinctively patterned black & white speckled, as is the tail which
has
a terminal band of black. Some blackish spots on undertail-coverts. Ssp australe
is slightly
smaller & has white speckling on upperwings restricted to outer
& inner blocks, whereas for ssp
capense speckling tends to bleed
between blocks. Breeds sub-Antarctic islands, moves N in winter.
