streaks on brownish belly. Male has
small patch of black & white streaks
in upper breast. Female streaks on patch rufous & white.
Ssp victoriae
is larger than nominate picumnus, w. head markings duller & less distinct.
Ssp
melanotus smaller, darker upperparts, crown & tail; pale
creamy-white bold supercilium; bolder
streaking on ear-coverts. In eucalypt
woodlands & forests w. grassy understory. On ground too.
