Notes: Male lanky & large. In br plumage sooty under, black lores & bill. Non-br: paler, dark patch
on belly. Female: much smaller, lighter eye-stripe; smaller dark patch on belly; greyish uppertail
coverts. Juvenile: upperparts neatly scaled buff, underparts dark streaking or speckling. In tree-
less habitats, especially grasslands. Forages on the ground. Breeds in southern Aust in spring/
summer, migrates inland or north in autumn/winter.
