Notes: Small. Mostly brown, darker above, w. grey head, black throat,
black bill, white undertail.
Short, rounded, black tail. Nominate ssp cincta
has a white rump, endangered; ssp atropygialis
black rump, locally common.
Cf Masked Finch which has longer pointed
tail, yellow bill, brown
head. Long-tailed
Finch similar, but has yellow to red bill, long wirey central tail feathers.
Forages on the ground in grassy scrubland, woodlands, near water.
