bold white spots on scapulars &
wing-coverts. Indistinct mid-grey facial
mask surrounds large yellow eyes. Underparts cream,
coarsely & broadly
streaked brownish. Female smaller than male, narrower head, rounded crown.
Ssp peninsularis smaller, paler w. warm brownish tones than nominate
connivens. Voice: repeated
rapid 'wook-wook'; pairs duet, female higher
pitch. In drier open country with stands of trees.
