Notes: Heavily-built wader w. upturned bicoloured bill, shortish legs. No bold wingbar. Female:
larger; longer bill. Breeding plumage is wholly rufous head & underparts (male) or rufous tinge
below (female). Nonbreeding is overall grey-brown w. white belly; Ssp baueri larger; rump,
axilliaries, uppertail coverts densely barred; breeds W Alaska. Ssp menzbieri smaller, more white
on lower back & rump; breeds in central Siberia. Tidal flats, wetlands.
